Environmental Living Program - Fort Ross Conservancy

The Environmental Living Program’s mission is to teach American schoolchildren about the rich intercultural settlement at Fort Ross, the only surviving Russian American Company’s outpost in the United States. Fort Ross Conservancy’s state-approved social science curriculum for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders is unique in that students experience life in the 19th-century Russian colony, specifically designed to showcase the unusual model of interaction and cooperation between the Russian settlers, Alaskan natives, and California Native peoples. The objective of the program is to introduce the value of Russian culture, the merits of cultural coexistence, and the importance of land stewardship to thousands of California students by performing the daily tasks that were part of daily life at Fort Ross. The program is also designed to cultivate a friendly attitude towards Russia among the new generation to create fertile ground of understanding to inspire bilateral ties in the future.
